CHOOSING
MIXES FOR MORTAR, RENDER AND LIMEWASH.
There is a great deal of discussion and some heated argument among
the 'experts' as to what can be added to lime mortars and renders. This
ranges from a purist 'nothing' through crushed brick or tile as pozzalanic
elements, to small amounts of cement to get an initial set. Suffice it
to say, that if an attempt is made to match the original fabric of a building,
then where possible this should include the mortar/render mixtures.
Remember
pure lime/sand is the softest and most permeable, cement based the hardest
and least permeable. It is a question of choosing the most appropriate
technology. The suggestions that follow are only for guidance, but have
been used successfully in locations in Britain.
It is important
that the users satisfy themselves that they choose an appropriate mix.
